Arc/Resistance Welding Processes

 

GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding)
Also known as metal inert gas (MIG), this is a welding process where an electric arc forms between a consumable MIG wired electrode and the workpiece metal.

GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding)
This process is also known as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. It uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode, an inert gas, and a separate filler material. This process is sometimes mistakenly referred to as Heliarc welding.

SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)
In this welding process, which is also known as manual metal arc welding or stick welding, a consumable electrode rod is used. It is used as the filler material and is covered in flux that protects the weld area from oxidation and contamination.
